An engaged woman took to Reddit for advice after telling her wedding guests that no children would be allowed on the big day — and got a huge backlash.
On the r/wedding subreddit, a user posted a question to other social media users asking for advice on a difficult situation surrounding a couple’s wedding.
“We’re having a baby-free wedding, but when we tell people, one couple said that [was] fine for the ceremony, but they would bring their kids (2 of them) to the reception — not asking [if] it’s okay,” the individual wrote.
The user added, “[They] told us they would do that. How do I act in this situation?”
Reddit users took to the comments section and advised the woman to go hard and lay down the law.
One user wrote, “I would reply and say, ‘Sorry if you misunderstood. The entire event is 18+ (or 21+) or adults only. We understand if this creates a hardship for you and look forward to celebrating with you at a later date if you are unable to attend.’
Another user said: “You will have to be as rude as them and tell them in no uncertain terms that children will not be allowed in the wedding or reception.”
Rosalinda Randall, an etiquette expert from California told Fox News Digital via email that the “no kids rule” should be fully enforced if it is implemented.
“As for guests making requests or asking for special treatment, you and your fiance have to decide where you draw the line,” she said to the bride.
Randall suggested that the Reddit user try to resolve the situation face-to-face with the guests, if possible, after deciding whether or not children are allowed at the wedding.
The etiquette expert added: “Are you enforcing it? Or are you making allowances for your nieces and nephews, or your best friend’s three-year-old? If so, you can anticipate hurt feelings, questions and condescending remarks from guests whose children were not involved.”
Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore suggested that the Reddit user respond by saying, “We love your kids! But we’ve decided to keep it ‘adults only’ to make things sustainable for everyone. We hope you are still able to join us!”
Allison Cullman, a wedding expert at Zola, told Fox News Digital that “childless” weddings are increasingly popular today.
Zola’s data shows that 47% of couples still invite children, while 35% ask guests to find babysitters for the evening.
“Even if a couple welcomes children to their wedding, many couples often make arrangements at the event to make sure the wedding is great for both the kids and the adults,” she said.
For example, Cullman said some couples will have designated play areas for children during the event.
She also said some couples will set age limits for children attending the wedding.
