The legend of the “Blue Lady” — a specter that haunts a lighthouse in Hilton Head, South Carolina — has inspired local breweries to name a beer after the ghost, who is supposedly seen in her infamous blue dress.
According to the story, lighthouse keeper Adam Fripp was working tirelessly to keep the lighthouses burning in the middle of a freak hurricane in 1983 that made landfall on Hilton Head Island when he fell down the stairs and died as a result.
But before he died, he had a dying wish for his daughter, Caroline.
Rumor has it that in his last breath, he told her to make sure she stayed at the lighthouse and kept it going,” Charles Pejeau, director of food and beverage and executive chef at Palmetto Dunes Resort in South Carolina told local media outlet WJCL.
Throughout the night, Caroline, dressed in blue, worked tirelessly to keep the beacons burning for the incoming ships. But the round-the-clock shifts pushed her to the limit, dying a week later of exhaustion.
Despite her death, Caroline remains committed to fulfilling her father’s request by following the lighthouse on South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island.
The young woman has become known as the infamous ghost called the “Blue Lady”, spotted near the top of the lighthouse or walking outside.
“When the storm starts, I think it probably brings back those bad memories for him,” Pejeau said. “And that’s when it kind of comes out when it’s dark and stormy.”
Pejeau revealed that staff at Palmetto Dunes Resort had noticed eerie occurrences inside the kitchen, explaining, “Maybe early, early in the morning or late at night. sort of; some lights will go on and off, or the sink will randomly turn on.”
Caroline’s haunted relationships also include swinging bottles of liquor and making mysterious phone calls to local restaurants, according to The Hilton Head Island Packet.
Even with the odd spirits that linger, the lighthouse remains a staple in the community, being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
